White Elephant
White Elephant Gift Exchange
White Elephant is a party game, not a name draw. Everyone brings a wrapped gift, participants open and steal gifts in turn, and the fun comes from the chaos rather than from a secret match.
White Elephant is a different game
In a Secret Santa exchange, the organizer draws names and each participant gives one gift to one hidden person. In White Elephant, everyone brings a gift to a central pool. Players open gifts one at a time in a set order, and later players can choose to steal an opened gift instead of opening a new one.
Those mechanics need different tooling. A White Elephant app has to track whose turn it is, which gifts have been opened, how many times each gift has been stolen, and when a gift is locked. None of that applies to a Secret Santa name draw.
Common White Elephant rules
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift within an agreed budget.
- Turn order is drawn randomly or decided by the host.
- On a turn, a player opens a new gift or steals an opened one.
- A gift can usually be stolen two or three times before it is locked.
- When a gift is stolen, its previous owner opens or steals another gift.
Hosts often add house rules: no stealing from the first player, a time limit per turn, or a final round where everyone may steal once more. Write the rules down and share them before the party so nobody is surprised mid-game.
Why we have not shipped a White Elephant tool
A half-built White Elephant page would be worse than no page. Without correct turn handling and steal tracking, the game breaks down quickly and participants disagree about what happened. Instead of faking those features, this site is clear about what exists today.
What to use today
If you are organizing a secret-giver exchange, the Secret Santa generator is live and free. If you are hosting a White Elephant party, use a paper list or a spreadsheet for turn order and steals until a dedicated tool is available.
Choosing the right format
Choose Secret Santa when you want a calm, private exchange with a clear budget and one recipient per person. Choose White Elephant when the group enjoys a louder party game and is comfortable with gifts changing hands. Both can work for offices and families; the right choice depends on the mood you want.
Frequently asked questions
Is White Elephant the same as Secret Santa?
No. Secret Santa assigns each person one hidden recipient. White Elephant is a party game where wrapped gifts are opened in turns and later participants may steal a gift. The two need different rules.
Does this site run a White Elephant game?
Not yet. The live tool draws Secret Santa names. White Elephant needs turn order, steal tracking, and gift locking, which are not implemented.
What rules does a White Elephant game need?
At minimum: a gift pool, a turn order, a limit on steals per gift, and a rule for when a gift becomes locked. Groups often cap steals at two or three per gift.
